Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce make for TOO MANY POPES in Netflix’s The Two Popes trailer

Eat your heart out, HBO: you may have the cool Young Pope, but Netflix is making up for age with sheer quantity.

In the streaming service’s The Two Popes, Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce respectively play and look a hell of a lot like Pope Benedict XVI and the here soon-to-be Pope Francis. Directed by The Constant Gardener’s Fernando Meirelles and written by biopic melodramatist Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody), the film seems to be sort of a papal Before Sunrise. The two meet, walk around having lengthy philosophical conversations, and—God willing—fuck.

Here’s the teaser trailer, anyway. The full film premieres at Telluride before a limited release November 27 and hitting Netflix December 20. Merry specifically-Catholic Christmas!
