Long before the Ford Motor Company began its longtime war against Calvin’s ceaseless piss discharge, they had another tough battle raging.
In the mid-’60s, with Ferrari dominating the prestigious endurance race 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ford decided to enter the fray, developing a new vehicle capable of winning the top prize.
In James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari, Matt Damon and Christian Bale star as somehow not Ford and Ferrari. This is the Batman v Superman where it’s all about Lucius Fox and, well, at least a different Batman. Damon plays Carroll Shelby, the automotive designer Ford hired to help design the GT40, the high-performance car meant to take on Ferrari. Bale (back to looking nearly as wiry and wild-eyed as in The Fighter days) plays Ken Miles, the British-born racer Shelby brought on to test drive the new vehicle and head up the race itself. Ford and Ferrari themselves never even seem to talk about their mothers’ names.
Ford v Ferrari hits theaters November 15.
