Well, Sofia Coppola’s Little Mermaid adaptation ended up not coming together, but it seems we now have a take that’s even more of a radical departure from the Disney model. This Little Mermaid has booze, and strip clubs!
The debut effort from Poland’s Agnieszka Smoczynska, The Lure sees a pair of mermaids encounter mankind—only to be enlisted as strippers for a seedy Warsaw nightclub. The mermaids also have Nosferatu teeth that they eat people with sometimes. And they nurse from an older woman in various wigs who also seems to be from the sea. Maybe she’s the Sebastian? You can find out February 1, when the film opens in New York City’s IFC Center.
