Eddie Murphy will star in a Grumpy Old Men remake

Ignoring that Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones pretty much already remade Grumpy Old Men with last year’s piss-poor Just Getting Started, New Line has decided to re-do it again—this time with Eddie Murphy. According to Deadline, Murphy has signed on to star in a comedy “inspired by” the 1993 Walter Matthau-Jack Lemmon film. Ride Along and Fantastic Four (2005)’s Tim Story is attached to direct and produce.

The original Grumpy Old Men saw Matthau and Lemmon as elderly, cantankerous, longtime rivals and neighbors competing for the heart of the newly-arrived Ann-Margret. Its success led to a sequel—Grumpier Old Men, naturally—hitting theaters two years later, birthing a Grumpy Old Cinematic Universe that would until now remained further unexplored.

The questions of who will co-star, and why Murphy would be considered all that old at 57, both can be answered simply enough with “Eddie Murphy in some stupid makeup.” Nonetheless, it seems that’s not what the studio is thinking: it’s said Samuel L. Jackson is being eyed as the other lead.
