On September 20, 1973, 55-year-old former tennis pro Bobby Riggs faced off against an in-her-prime Billie Jean King. An estimated 90 million worldwide watched to see who was the superior player: an aging braggart, or a feminist at the peak of her game. More recently, we’ve saved that kind of match for our presidential election, but at that time, we did it on the court—and (spoiler alert!) the results were quite a bit different then, too. The event was given the fairly on-the-nose title Battle of the Sexes. That’s also the title of this movie about the match, which sees Steve Carell as Riggs and Emma Stone as King. What a strange new spin-off for the Crazy, Stupid, Love./Gangster Squad/La La Land trilogy.
