Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and I’m becoming a feature film

A pre-adolescent girl’s search for God and her first bra is headed to the big screen. Deadline is reporting that James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films have managed to nab the film rights to Judy Blume’s seminal (ovarian?) coming-of-age novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Blume had long rejected offers to adapt her works but in recent months apparently came around to the idea of getting a ton of money: already in August she tweeted that she was in Los Angeles taking meetings. The pitch that finally got her came from Kelly Fremon Craig, whose directorial debut, The Edge of Seventeen, also did a bang-up job speaking to a girl’s awkward developmental years. Craig will now write and direct the project as her follow-up to that film. At the moment, there’s not yet a screenplay, though, so we’ll have to wait a bit to find out which boys Margaret likes.
