Marvel Studios is going to finish its sole auteur-driven trilogy after all. According to Deadline, both Disney and James Gunn’s reps have confirmed that Gunn has been reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.
The news comes now eight months since Disney booted Gunn from the franchise over some old tweets that, given everything else that’s going on right now, weren’t even so big a deal. Disney chairman Alan Horn claimed that was that, and Gunn moved on to the DCEU’s similar band of alternately hot and gross criminal-cum-hero misfits.
Yet, apparently “persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after,” Horn and his wallet have had a belated change of heart.
It’s unclear how Gunn’s directing Suicide Squad 2 will affect the release of Guardians 3—once planned for a 2020 debut. But at least Dave Bautista doesn’t have to puke now.
