At the box office over the weekend: pretty much the same as the weekend before. With only one new wide release—this time, the R-rated Office Christmas Party—Moana held on to the top spot while smaller films fought for the niche markets.
Notably, of those smaller films, La La Land set 2016’s high for per-theater average. Debuting in only five spots, it pulled in $855k, or an estimated $171,000 per screen. That’s about all that was notable, though. Sorry.
This coming weekend, look forward to Moana finally falling as Disney goes ahead and tops themselves with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
