Nightcrawler’s Jake Gyllenhaal and Dan Gilroy return with the Velvet Buzzsaw trailer

A mix of Los Angeles art scene satire and lurid, schlocky, horror thrills (someone gets attacked by a monkey painting), Velvet Buzzsaw seems to be what Sam Raimi would have done with Art School Confidential (right down to John Malkovich’s pretentious presence).

Rather, it’s a re-teaming of Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy and his star, Jake Gyllenhaal. The story centers on a dead recluse’s paintings that, while made hugely popular in the art world, are seemingly possessed and brought to literally bloody life. Fellow Nightcrawler-er Rene Russo and Toni Collette co-star alongside Gyllenhaal’s latest over-the-top, madcap performance. After going as big as he could among his more nuanced, darker roles, idiotic Disney fare, and once playing his own twin, the guy is about to become the next Nicolas Cage. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing…
