Superman is a juvenile delinquent in the Brightburn trailer

What if a young Superman ended up being less a big, blue boy scout, more a little, crazy sociopath? That is, wholly and unabashedly, the high-concept premise of Brightburn.

Produced by James Gunn, and written by a brother and cousin, the film sees Elizabeth Banks and The Office‘s David Denman as Martha and Jonathan Kent in everything but name. The rural couple find a crashed spaceship, adopt the kid inside it, find out he has powers—you get the idea. But in this take, our young Clark Kent seems to have some pretty serious emotional issues, and a connection to a strange symbol. On his world, it means “try not to take classes with this dude.”

Brightburn hits theaters May 24.
