Terminator: Dark Fate sure does look like a belated, belabored Terminator

The sixth film in a tired franchise—and one with such a vague, lame subtitle, no less—Terminator: Dark Fate should be doomed to a straight-to-video release. Instead, it’s apparently mankind’s best chance for Terminator’s salvation post-Terminator: Salvation, a kind-of-reboot that picks up after Judgement Day and has James Cameron producing and working on the story.

Unfortunately, from the looks of this CGI mush-filled trailer—backed by the latest sparse, dramatic, covers of a ’90s song—it seems the machines may have won.

Remember how Deadpool director Tim Miller did that cool highway action scene? And how Terminator 2 also did that cool highway action scene? Well, now they’ve converged on, you guessed it, the highway! And remember how the metal skeleton Terminator was usurped by the liquid metal Terminator. Well, now those two have also merged, and you better damn well believe they’re on the highway.

Blade Runner 2049′s Mackenzie Davis stars in her latest role where it’s hard to tell whether or not she’s entirely a robot. She’s joined by former Terminator stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, though it seems now Natalia Reyes is in the Hamilton role of the Mary figure who must survive. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ghost Rider, Gabriel Luna, once again does a glowing-eyed skull routine as the main antagonist.

Schwarzenegger boasted that the trailer “doesn’t give the movie away,” and indeed, it’s anyone’s guess what’s going on here or why we should care. Anyone looking to find out can do so when Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters November 1.
