Taking another swaggering stride away from anything to do with petty crimes and street races, the latest chapter of the Fast/Furious franchise goes even more ludicrous than ever (though noticeably less Ludacris as a consequence).
Hobbs & Shaw is the first spin-off of the series—a test to see whether the franchise may live on should the petty Instagram beefs of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Tyrese finally implode the main “story,” as it is.
As is increasingly workaday, this chapter sees another A-list terrorist (this time, Idris Elba’s Brixton) looking to carry out a world-ending threat. And with Dom presumably off sipping Coronas somewhere, there’s only one incredibly-jacked odd couple that can stop it: Johnson’s Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Shaw.
Adding another offhanded level of science fiction to the series: also, Brixton is literally superhuman. He has some kind of cybernetic implants that have made him incredibly strong and, apparently, bulletproof. Because why not?
Directed by action maestro David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2), Hobbs & Shaw will probably be better than it has any right to be when it hits theaters August 2.
