Fulfilling his promise to “fucking come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay” if he didn’t get an Oscar for Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler has again made one that looks so bad.
Hubie Halloween sees Sandler showing his typical unwavering loyalty in bringing past collaborators together to collect paychecks for an absolutely shitty comedy. Director Steve Brill (Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler) leads a random dice roll of Sandler regulars that includes Happy Gilmore‘s Julie Bowen, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph, and Tim Meadows—with bit parts for Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, and Shaq, naturally—into a watered down Waterboy that also reunites its star with a loose Cajun accent and comical beverage prop.
Sandler plays Hubie DuBois, a Halloween-loving, smalltown buffoon notorious for his unnecessary police reports. His days of crying wolf in a stupid voice come to haunt him when a mysterious force starts disappearing people and no one will believe him. Also, Hubie has this gadget thermos that’s apparently a running gag.
While indeed Hubie Halloween is making us pay for Sandler’s Oscar snub, we thankfully need not offer such a premium to accept our punishment; it’s available on Netflix October 7.
