When it was announced back in 2015, Timecrimes writer-director Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal was being sold on the elevator pitch “It’s Godzilla meets Lost in Translation.” It’s an intriguing description, but one that’s not really on display in this first teaser trailer. Yeah, there’s a Pacific Rim-but-dopier giant monster lumbering around. And yeah, the naturalistic, washed-out shots of a beautiful actress do smack a bit of Sofia Coppola. But tonally, it seems like something else entirely. Like, it’s also about lazily getting drunk and fucking around with Tim Blake Nelson and Jason Sudeikis? From the looks of things, that elevator pitch may need to be amended with “meets any Jake Johnson character.” We’ll find out when the film hits theaters April 7.
