Zack Snyder’s tepid, plodding Army of the Dead sure didn’t demand a prequel. That it began after the zombie apocalypse had already been safely contained was probably the closest to clever it ever got. But here we are, just over two months since Netflix put out the zombie feature, and somehow there’s already a teaser for its spinoff, Army of Thieves.
Snyder only gets a shared story credit on this one, his Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten taking on the screenplay and one of his stars, Matthias Schweighöfer, taking on directing duties. Schweighöfer also stars, reprising his role as safecracker Ludwig Dieter. Now he has to crack a different safe that seemingly does not involve zombies!
Seeing what drab paste had newly oozed out of Snyder’s mush-mind was nearly the entire draw of the first movie, but Schweighöfer has his charms, so maybe he can pull off one more job. We’ll find out later this year.
