He has yet to give us his long-promised Twins sequel (Triplets, naturally), but Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to comedy in another form with Killing Gunther. The directing debut of SNL‘s Taran Killam sees Schwarzenegger in the title role as a top assassin being hunted by Killam’s Blake and his team—among them, fellow SNL alumni Bobby Moynihan, Paul Brittain, and an obvious wig that looks like it was slapped on in an ad break. Cobie Smulders, Hannah Simone, and Allison Tolman also co-star.
Strangely, while Arnold would seem the obvious straight man to this lineup of comedy ringers, he seems to go bigger and hammier than the lot. Paired with the easy, burnt-out, decreasingly-rationalized mockumentary format, it makes for a preview that feels like more of a Funny or Die one-off chuckle than a feature film trailer. But hopefully the full movie can deliver a bit more. It arrives on-demand September 22.
