Did we think we’d be excited for a Barbie movie that’s gone through umpteenth ill-fated iterations across its years of cynical development based entirely on brand recognition? No, we did not. But are we pretty jazzed to see what writer-director Greta Gerwig and her Ken, co-writer Noah Baumbach, have done with it? You bet your DreamCamper we fuckin’ are.
So we’re thrilled that we didn’t even have to learn about THE WAY OF WATER to see the film’s just-released first teaser—a 2001: A Space Odyssey spoof that only gives a brief peek at the titular doll’s predictably glossy world. Margot Robbie aptly stars in the lead role, with Ryan Gosling as (a) Ken alongside a stacked supporting cast that includes the likes of Simu Liu, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and Rhea Perlman. If this life in plastic is not fantastic, it should at least prove interesting.
