The year has brought us many trailers that were exciting, promising, fun, emotional, and perfectly cut to a song. But perhaps no single one has so masterfully captured all those traits as this spectacular new trailer for Okja.
Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to Snowpiercer, the film sees Tilda Swinton once again playing a pontificating villain with bad teeth and a penchant for feeding the masses an unlikely protein. She plays the head of a corporation trying to capture the titular hippo-like, Miyazakian beast that’s lovingly bonded to a farmer girl (Korean moppet Ahn Seo-hyun). Swinton’s company, Mirando, wants to clone Okja and have his kind become the hot new meat on everyone’s plate. Meanwhile, an anarchist animal rights group fronted by Paul Dano, Lily Collins, and Steven Yeun are trying to stop that from happening and return Okja to his young friend. Giancarlo Esposito and Jake Gyllenhaal co-star as what appear to be a Mirando executive and a Mirando carnival barker, respectively. It looks like Snowpiercer‘s sci-fi, Swinton-y satire meets the new Pete’s Dragon by way of a PETA fever dream.
We’ll see if the full film can match the Mammas & Papas-fueled splendor of this trailer’s back half when Okja arrives on Netflix on June 28.
