Christian Bale’s notoriously gravely, growling Batman has just been one-upped. See (and hear) for yourself with this new trailer for The Batman—introducing the Batman who’s so pissed off you can’t even understand what the hell he’s saying.
Premiered for the weekend’s unbearably-titled DC FanDome, The Batman‘s first full trailer opens on police arresting Paul Dano’s Riddler for ordering a latte that’s way too on-the-nose (did he pour the milk into a question mark?). Akin to Heath Ledger’s Joker, it seems the capture was intentional on his part, though: from behind prison visitation booth glass, he tells Batman, “I’ve been trying to reach you…”
To which Batman replies… “[garbled rage]”? Some have suggested he’s shouting, “What have you done!?” Maybe? Either way, it’s clear this young Batman is ready to double-down on snarling to the point of being incomprehensible.
We also get more of Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, Colin Farrell’s Penguin, and Andy Serkis’s Alfred—to whom Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne reveals, “I don’t care what happens to me.” This guy is all-in on the Detective Crashmore approach that he doesn’t care if he dies at all. Everything has sucked lately.
Anyway, we already knew from the teaser that this would be an angry, violent Batman still learning to control himself. But from some new scenes in this extended preview, now we also know that extends to grimacing and screaming while driving the Batmobile. This is Batman at his most unhinged. Or, rather, Unhinged, starring Russell Crowe.
We’ll see how far his road rage goes when The Batman hits theaters March 4.
