Directed by Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Gore Verbinski, A Cure for Wellness outwardly appears to be the twin film of Shutter Island—albeit, arriving half-a-decade late to truly belong in the category.
As with Scorsese’s 2010 psychological-thriller, our lead is a squashed-faced, boyishly modelesque actor dressed up to look adult with a classic beige trench coat, then sent out to investigate a creepy asylum. This time it’s Dane DeHaan as a young executive sent out to retrieve his company’s CEO, who abruptly departed for a strange “wellness center” hidden in the Swiss Alps. There, DeHaan ends up himself diagnosed with illness, becoming an unwilling patient and struggling to escape with his sanity in spite of so many visions of little worms.
Jason Isaacs costars alongside our most beautiful Aileen Wuornos, Mia Goth. If DeHaan himself ends up being the CEO that was declared insane, I’m going to spit at the screen. We can see whether that happens on February 17.
