Look, Disney. This animation all looks very slick if thoroughly conventional. It is great you’re doing a fantasy Southeast Asian story. And your locales look very diverse and gorgeously rendered. But we are fully in the 2020s now. Saying “really?” or “uhhhhh, we’re doomed” as a joke is just not cutting it anymore. We have been in quarantine for a year. When the dragon inevitably says “nailllllled itttt,” someone is going to lose it. Every person who finally flips their lid at the hands of Kelly Marie Tran’s condescending “that’s… not a thing” is going to be on you.
Raya and the Last Dragon hits Disney+ Premier Access and theaters—uh, seriously?—March 5.
