What if a Silicon Valley-level Google parody were played for thrills instead of laughs? That’s the question asked by the first trailer for The Circle, The End of the Tour director James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel of the same name. Emma Watson stars as a new hire at a tech company led by charismatic, Jobs-y founder Tom Hanks. Like all the internet perverts hoping they’ll get to see some nudes, Hanks encourages Watson to live a transparent life. But as so many eerily knowledgable targeted ads have shown us, abandoning privacy can have frightening consequences.
