The latest from writer-director Paul Schrader, First Reformed sees Ethan Hawke as a priest who looks pitifully despondent in every shot. He’s not without cause, though: his son died in Iraq, his congregation’s husband of Amanda Seyfried seems to be plotting domestic terrorism, and now that he’s discovered all the fucked up videos you can watch online, he’s having a crisis of faith and reduced to using Pepto Bismol as a mixer. Can he, like so many of us, find holy salvation via the God’s Not Dead film series? We’ll find out when the A24 release hits theaters May 18.
