Seemingly Paper Towns by way of Inherent Vice, Under the Silver Lake is an ambitious, unexpected reach for It Follows writer-director David Robert Mitchell—but one that looks like it could really pay off if it works. Mitchell’s sophomore effort sees Andrew Garfield as Sam, a Los Angeles stoner whose neighbor and new crush (Riley Keough) abruptly disappears overnight, taking nearly all of apartment with her. But after Sam finds a strange symbol on her wall and a shoebox of belongings in her closet, he becomes convinced that they’re clues to her whereabouts, sending him down a paranoid but rollicking rabbit hole to find her.
This Big Lebowski for attractive hipsters hits theaters June 22.
