If you’re going into cryosleep anyway, why not pass the eff out the natural way—with a bunch of alcohol? That’s the question raised and tossed back in Prologue: Last Supper, an intro to Alien: Covenant that doubles down on that film’s extraneous backstory and on-the-nose biblical allegory. Directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Luke Scott, it gives us our first meeting and final drinks with the crew—a ragtag group that includes James Franco, Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston, Amy Seimetz, Demián Bichir, Billy Crudup, and Michael Fassbender. It also gives us our first taste of this being the Couples Retreat of the franchise: turns out, the team is composed of partnered-up pairs meant to colonize a planet. We’ve got McBride punching above his weight with Upstream Color‘s Seimetz, Crudup coupled with Selma‘s Carmen Ejogo, and, giving us progressive hope for the future, Hateful Eight‘s Bichir sharing a cryo-bed with Nathaniel Dean. They may not be capable of populating a planet, but man, what they’ll do for its local theater community.
