Go gonzo for the first look at Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka

On Sunday, Timothée Chalamet took to Twitter to reveal a first look at his title character in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka.

Dickensian Gonzo

It didn’t take long for everyone to realize he looked like some combination of Gonzo in Muppet Christmas Carol, Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York, and Johnny Depp (the actor himself more than his Wonka; that’s a scarf straight from the Depp closet). This bashful theater kid really thought he was gonna wow ’em at prom!

While a Willy Wonka prequel movie sounds like a satire of Hollywood’s creative bankruptcy—and now we see sort of looks like it too—there’s reason to think this may actually continue Chalamet’s hot streak. Wonka comes from director Paul King and co-writer Simon Farnaby, the team that gave us the universally-acclaimed instant classics of the Paddington franchise. If they can pull those off, then maybe they can do the same for this other weird little dude in a jacket and hat.
