Guillermo del Toro sets up his superior Pinocchio with a new trailer

Do we need more Pinocchio adaptations—let alone two in one year? Absolutely not. Roberto Benigni doing two in the last 20 years alone should have been more than enough. But here we are, with both Disney and Netflix giving us a couple within the span of a few months. And you know what? Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio LOOKS DELIGHTFUL.

A wonderfully-animated stop-motion take co-directed by del Toro, written by the creator of Over the Garden Wall, and with Ewan McGregor as cricket-cum-narrator? Hell yeah; let’s do it. And Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton, too? Even better!

Anyway, here’s the trailer—a formal announcement that Disney can send Tom Hanks packing and again strand him in an airport or island or whatever, because this is clearly the Pinocchio we need. If we need one. Which we don’t.

Nevertheless, we’ll be getting it on Netflix this December.
