Based on John Bellairs’ kid-lit classic, and too easily sung to The Smiths’ “The Boy with the Thorn in His Side,” The House with the Clock in Its Walls is the latest addition to the popular “orphaned boy sent to live in a magic place” genre. Young Owen Vaccaro stars, with Jack Black playing his warlock uncle and Cate Blanchett playing the friendly witch next door. They’re all hoping to stop a doomsday clock Kyle MacLachlan built into the walls of a home. In a departure from his usual, decidedly less family-oriented fare, Eli Roth directed this gothic take on HGTV’s Fixer Upper. It hits theaters September 21.
