With The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, the Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals team of Jody Hill and Danny McBride have returned with another tale of a prideful, middle-aged, mustachioed Southern white buffoon trying to reconnect with his estranged family. But if its trailer is any indication, this may well be their most lighthearted effort (especially compared to Hill’s uncomfortably, controversially dark Observe & Report).
The film stars Josh Brolin as Buck Ferguson, host of a low-budget deer-hunting show. Like a woodsy Steve Zissou, he’s hoping to make his best episode yet by way of an outing that sees him reconnecting with his son—a teenager more interested in texting his girlfriend than killing his first deer. Danny McBride is of course in tow as Buck’s faithful cameraman.
We’ll find out whether Hill’s inner darkness finally emerges, sending that kid into his own Deliverance, when Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter hits Netflix next Friday, July 6.
