Like its human namesake, The Commuter practically begs you not to make eye contact with it. The movie is the fourth collaboration between a gun-toting Liam Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra, the director who’s dragged Neeson through such forgettable, sub-Taken actioners as Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. A sad and unintentionally meta effort, The Commuter sees our mid-60s hero offered a huge wad of cash to do the same routine he did in Non-Stop: wield a pistol and growl into a phone about being set up while trying to finger his foe on mass transit. But here the transportation vessel is a train instead of an airplane. Because we already crammed him into a sub for K-19: The Widowmaker.
Anyway, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Sam Neill, and Elizabeth McGovern co-star. You can see how much more of the film weirdly emphasizes wedding rings when The Commuter inauspiciously hits theaters January 12.
