Margot Robbie as Barbie looks about right

After more than a decade of a Barbie movie being stuck in development hell, this first look at Barbie is less impressive for what it shows than what it means: for better or worse, this thing is finally happening. This Barbie will not be left nude, hair mangled, in a sandbox. She’s making it to her DreamHouse of the silver screen.

The movie about the doll comes from fantastic Lady Bird writer-director Greta Gerwig, co-written with partner and Frances Ha director Noah Baumbach. And it does seem to feature a generically-attractive, white, blonde woman (Margot Robbie) in a bright pink car, so they aren’t reinventing the wheel here. Ryan Gosling co-stars as Ken, the man who shares those traits. America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, and others fill in the gaps of this plastic-jointed universe.

Barbie isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until July of next year, so there’s still time for this to fall apart.
