The Academy Awards now over, our focus on prestigious and historically significant films behind us, we can at last get back to the real meaning of cinema: movies about giant apes wreckin’ stuff. So kick things off with this new trailer for Kong: Skull Island, the King Kong reboot that sees Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, John Goodman and others trying to survive against the world’s most famous non-Harambe simian. A refreshing departure from the likes of Cloverfield and Godzilla, this preview doesn’t play around when it comes to showing us the enormous monster(s) we were promised. There’s plenty of Kong, plenty of other freaks, and plenty of reason to think this could hit that gleefully ridiculous Pacific Rim sweet spot as solidly as Kong smacks a “skull-crawler” with a giant log. Incidentally, make sure you watch until the end to see that happen with the log. It’s pretty cool.
