Going in Style stripped down in both its look and number of leads, The Old Man and the Gun is our latest entry to the “elderly fella robbing banks and romancing” genre—but one with a considerable pedigree. Written and directed by A Ghost Story and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints‘ David Lowery, the film sees Robert Redford as a septuagenerian escaped convict and bank robber on the run from the law. Lowery muse Casey Affleck is on his tail, but Redford is on Sissy Spacek’s tail, if you catch where this old man is pointing his gun. Danny Glover, Tom Waits, Tika Sumpter, John David Washington, Keith Carradine, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Elizabeth Moss round out an impressive, eclectic cast.
The film is based on the 2003 New Yorker article of the same name about real-life grizzled crook Forrest Tucker. You can read it here. But if you’d rather see it through Bob Redford’s handsome crags, you’ll have to wait until The Old Man and the Gun hits theaters September 28.
