Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Offs WILL Be in ‘Homecoming’ Universe, at Least in Some Sense

Though Sony has wasted no time in looking beyond Spider-Man: Homecoming to a couple of Spider-Man spin-offs (see: Venom, Silver & Black), they’ve since left us with a confused understanding as to just how much those films would actually involve the arachnoid hero. With a deal between Sony and Marvel bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s been unclear whether a spin-off would—or even could—acknowledge anything that Homecoming sets up, up to and including its lead.

But now, in an interview with Filmstarts (via), Spider-Man: Homecoming producer and former Sony head Amy Pascal has clarified the matter. Sort of?

“[The spin-offs] will all take place in the world that we’re now creating for Peter Parker,” she said. “They’ll be adjuncts to it. They may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other as well.”

Connected to each other, sure, but does that include seeing Spider-Man himself? Pascal still isn’t exactly coming clean on that, only teasing, “There’s always a chance!”

Basically, these spin-off films are the cinematic equivalent of of Applebee’s appetizers. They’re on the same menu as the main courses, but they aren’t. These are just sides that have been turned into a not-very-appetizing meal by forcing them to intermix in a greasy combo platter. Will you get some of the actual entrée meal with that, though? Well, given the disorganization of this disreputable kitchen, you never know what’s going to sneak its way onto the plate! You’ll just have to wait and see whether it’s a little chunk of re-fired steak (our latest rebooted Spider-Man), or a stray French fry you don’t even notice at the bottom of the basket (a shot of Homecoming‘s Principal Morita walking behind Venom).
