Spike Jonze almost directed ‘Ace Ventura 2’

Turns out, Jim Carrey emerging from a fake rhinoceros vagina could have had a quiet but surreal naturalism, the setting sun flaring against Carrey’s glistening body as he forced himself out a massive robot ungulate’s birthing canal. Because Spike Jonze almost directed Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Carrey recently appeared on stage with Jonze to talk about their Man on the Moon documentary (Jonze produced it) Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. There, the former pet detective reportedly spoke of regretting his mid-’90s decision to nix a then-untested Jonze from directing the Ace Ventura sequel. Said Carrey:

I’ve been wanting to do something with Spike forever. I was stupid enough to turn him down to direct Ace 2, ’cause I had no idea who he was. And he came in and pitched all kinds of shit, and he was about to take over the world, and I didn’t know it. I was like ‘I don’t know, this guy’s new.’ And I’ve been kicking myself ever since.

Truly, a terrible time to finally show restraint in shouting “alrighty then!”
