Taika Waititi Star Wars movie confirmed; Leslye Headland Star Wars series announced

Remember that rumor from a few months ago about Taika Waititi making a Star Wars movie? Well, that’s happening.

As it is Star Wars Day—that annual pun about a franchise you can’t help but see referenced every goddamn day as it is—Disney and Lucasfilm today made official that the Mandalorian season one finale director will next co-write and direct a feature involving some more of George Lucas’s forfeited property. 1917 and Last Night in Soho co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns will follow up her collaborations with Sam Mendes and Edgar Wright to join Waititi on the script.

But that’s not enough Star Wars for Star Wars Day. Star Wars Day is a day to dive unflinchingly into the garbage chute of Star Wars; to be so consumed with Star Wars that it’s impossible to tell where your body ends and Nien Nunb’s begins. So there is another Star Wars announcement.

It seems that, despite having an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, a Cassian Andor series, and another season of The Mandalorian already in the works, Disney+ still does not have enough Star Wars crap. To correct the situation, Disney has hired Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on yet another Star Wars series. If it ends up being Hustlers but with this crew, I will shut the fuck up.
