A sequel to 2018’s barely mediocre The Meg—if deemed necessary at all—should clearly be a straight-to-video affair. Jason Statham would be replaced by some WWE guy or something. But it seems Warner Bros. has other, more grandiose plans for their franchise about a very large shark.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has set Ben Wheatley—director of such skilled genre work as Free Fire and High Rise—to helm The Meg 2. Statham is set to return, and will now also be involved creatively. He’s got some big ideas for what a gigantic shark could do! And this may end up the unreasonably good fish sequel James Cameron’s Piranha II: The Spawning should have been.
