Junji Ito’s Uzumaki anime looks insane (even without its horrors)

Manga horror legend Junji Ito’s Uzumaki is finally getting the anime treatment, and damn do these 30 seconds of it look great.

If you don’t know Ito’s work per se, you may at least have seen his comic where people keep shoving themselves into their perfectly-fit forms in a mountain—or maybe the iconic image of a girl with a crazy spiral going through her head, which I will not spoil in case you haven’t seen it and want to be even more horrified by it being animated.

Anyway, Uzumaki (“Spiral” in Japanese) is about this city plagued by supernatural curlicues. It’s pretty wild, and this adaptation from Adult Swim looks pretty faithful to it in this brief teaser. In its preamble and postscript, director Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushishi) explains that the project is taking longer than expected, and it’s like, yeah, I bet. This looks crazy to animate.

Anyway, now it’s expected to hit Toonami October 2022. What a helluva Halloween surprise!
