Bad news: Nathan Fielder has still not revived Nathan for You. But here’s the good news: Nathan Fielder has instead made a different sort-of-reality series where he’s again subtly fucking with people under the guise of “help.” Have a look with the trailer for HBO’s The Rehearsal.
The high-concept series takes Fielder’s behavioral experiment schtick to a new, almost Charlie Kaufman-esque level. The comedian has found subjects who wants to deal with some uncomfortable situation in their lives, and Fielder is giving them the chance to get it right by rote. A crew builds a replica of where the event will take place and a team of actors help to rehearse how it all might go down. It’s a bit like going over an anticipated confrontation over and over in the shower—or, in James Cameron’s case, in an interview about his long Avatar movie—but now on a professional set and with Fielder’s droll outside perspective.
Start guessing now which people will be sweetly sad and which will say something completely unhinged, because there’s only a week left until The Rehearsal hits HBO July 15.
