From Fast Five, to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, to G.I. Joe: Retaliation, to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Dwayne Johnson has been the go-to guy to plunk into a sequel in need of star power or just general mass. And it seems now he’ll be lending his weight to a Big Trouble in Little China sequel.
That Johnson is involved in a Big Trouble revival isn’t really news: he was in talks to produce and star in as much back in 2015. But at that time, the film was described as a remake, with The Rock said to specifically be cramming himself into the part of Jack Burton—the iconic role made famous by Kurt Russell in the 1986 cult classic.
Johnson’s producing partner Hiram Garcia now says that’s not the case. Speaking to Collider, Garcia explained, “We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China. You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of Big Trouble in Little China. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character.”
And yes, now they can and certainly will call it BIGGER Trouble in Little China, and after the title pops up in the trailer, have a shot that really shows off the enormity of The Rock. Just as the original so clearly demanded.
