It was last May that, for whatever reason, Chris Rock abruptly halted his normal career to pursue “a fantastic vision” he had for a Saw sequel-cum-reboot.
Now with the first trailer for that film, we finally see just what his irresistible premise was: Saw as a budget Seven knock-off, but also Rock peppers it with dated standup routines?
In Spiral—marketed as coming from “The Book of Saw,” that holy gospel of the rosy-cheeked torture puppet—Rock stars as a veteran cop of course paired with a fresh-faced rookie (Max Minghella) as they pursue a serial killer who’s targeting police officers. Samuel L. Jackson co-stars as Rock’s father, who is probably going to end up being the killer, right? And he’s probably Danny Glover’s twin brother or something?
Guess we’ll find out when Spiral hits theaters May 15.
