Aladdin is still in the top five at the box office, and The Lion King is less than two weeks from hitting theaters, but already Disney is looking ahead to their next forgettable, less artful adaptation of an animated film. Have a look with the just-released teaser for the studio’s Mulan.
In fairness, this latest at least appears less like a bland re-hash than a re-imagining of the classic Chinese legend. With nary an Eddie Murphy-voiced dragon to be heard, Whale Rider director Niki Caro seems to be taking the material seriously, and everything seen here looks like an honest-to-god, epic action-drama. We’ll see whether that works out for audiences that have been eating up Will Smith as a rapping genie when Mulan arrives next spring.
