Though his most famous work is now plastered across freshman girls’ dorm rooms around the world, Vincent Van Gogh wasn’t always such a welcome presence. As the sort of guy who would hack off his own ear, he was, unsurprisingly, a bit troubled—and ostracized as a result. Consequently, he also makes a good role for Willem Dafoe. Have a look with the trailer for At Eternity’s Gate, starring Dafoe as Van Gogh, Oscar Isaac as Paul Gauguin, and Mads Mikkelsen as a priest that knows how to push some introspective buttons.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly director Julian Schnabel’s first film since 2010’s Miral, At Eternity’s Gate hits theaters November 16.
