It seems The Last Witch Hunter may not be the last The Last Witch Hunter.
Speaking to Collider and, at the same time, no one at all, Diesel himself recently offered up the possibility of a follow-up to his 2015 bomb. “I’m in a meeting with Lionsgate and they’re actively creating the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter,” the actor said, adding that the studio is on the search for a writer.
Diesel attributes the development to the fact that, in his words, “As an artist [again, his words], the more experienced I get, the more I am appreciating just the fact that my work somehow finds you and that you get to experience it at your own time and at your own pace.”
The implication is that The Last Witch Hunter has slowly grown into some kind of cult hit, leading to Lionsgate’s renewed interest. More likely, it’s due to The Witcher‘s recent success in the slim “muscular sword guy witch property” genre—and that The Last Witch Hunter was, bewilderingly, already fairly successful. Though the film took a critical and commercial drubbing domestically, grossing $27 million on a $90 million budget and settling at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it somehow made almost another $120 million internationally.
It’s not yet clear whether The Last Witch Hunter 2 will actually move forward, or if the man who’s insisted on reprising Dom Toretto, xXx, and Riddick will shift his gaze to assert that audiences are now clamoring for the return of The Pacifier.
