Clueless is being cluelessly remade

Sending the ’90s kids of the world into a chorus of as ifs, Deadline is reporting that Clueless is getting a remake. GLOW and New Girl writer Marquita Robinson is handling the script for Paramount, but it’s not yet known whether this is going to be a period thing or an update. And, honestly, which would be more misguided?

The 1995 original is a cultural landmark, in the running with Wayne’s World and maybe Hackers for being the most definitively, inexorably ’90s movie in existence. Its wardrobe and dialogue are already so on-the-nose that it reads as a period piece, so re-doing it as ’90s pastiche would be a pointless, futile effort. But if it’s brought into modern times, is that even Clueless anymore? That’s just another loose, updated adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. The Brady Bunch Movie anachronism approach doesn’t even work, because ’90s fashions are cool again. Truly: ugh, as if.
