David Lowery is doing an Arthurian fantasy and an Explorers remake

Big news for ’80s kids and 14th century kids! According to Deadline, David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, The Old Man & the Gun) is developing a series adaptation of Explorers and a film take on Gawain and the Green Knight.

The former is a remake of 1985’s Explorers, the Joe Dante-directed film that saw young Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and the other kid go on an outer space adventure. Lowery is reportedly writing a pilot and series bible with Cary Fukunaga, and one of the two will direct should it get an order.

Gawain and the Green Knight is based on the Arthurian story, a pretty strange tale of Sir Gawain beheading and later giving several kisses to an invincible virescent man. You can read up on this tale of head loss and smooching here, or just wait until Lowery’s adaptation hits theaters. The director has already made a production deal with his A Ghost Story distributor, A24.
