Before the Console Wars, back before even the Cola Wars, a dark but often sweetened battle was fought between Earth’s most powerful chocolatiers. As laid out in the 2010 book Chocolate Wars, the conception of the chocolate bar led to intense rivalries, romances, and high-stakes betrayals among the big names in tasty little brown slabs. In the UK, there were the Cadbury, Rowntree and Fry families; from the American front came Hershey and Mars; and coming in from the east were Europeans Nestle and Lindt. (Only late 19th-century lads will remember how delighting in Rowntree chocolate nibbles was for LOSERS.) Now, over a century later, that international tale of sweetened cacao is being adapted into a television drama. According to Deadline, the Sony-backed British production company Fable Pictures has started development on the project, hiring on writer Smita Bhide (The Indian Detective, Transporter: The Series) and director Tom Harper (The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, Amazon’s upcoming The Aeronauts). Should it prove successful, assumedly then we’ll get the even more thrilling follow-up: Cadbury v Kinder: Chocolate Egg Battle Royale.
