Today is the 36th anniversary of the release of The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s oddball, cult, fantasy adventure brought kids a mixture of horrific creatures and, if we’re being honest, kind of weirdly attractive ones.
Today is also more than a year-and-a-half since Netflix released the first teaser for The Dark Crystal: Age of the Resistance, a long, long in the making follow-up in development since at least 2006 (first as a sequel, now as a prequel).
And today is when Netflix finally released some news about their prequel. They just released the first few images, along with a voice cast list that is equally vast and arbitrary; as much as it’s darts-at-a-photo-board, it’s also bizarre just how many darts were thrown, at such eclectic targets.
Here’s the cast list: Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nathalie Emmanuel, Helena Bonham-Carter, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Keegan-Michael Key, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Harvey Fierstein, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Caitriona Balfe, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Theo James, Harris Dickinson, and—hey!—why not Mark Hamill, too?
Though they didn’t figure out how to merge Gwyneth Paltrow and a cat to make an actual Gelfling, it’s pretty impressive nonetheless.
Anyway, here are the first shots of your leads (Egerton, Taylor-Joy, and Emmanuel).
