In giving us our first-ever Wonder Woman movie, and the first DC Cinematic Universe movie that isn’t hugely irritating, Patty Jenkins has also pulled off another first. Over the weekend, she just became the first female director to crack a $100 million domestic opening. Her Wonder Woman debuted at number one with $100.5 million, giving Jenkins the top debut ever for a woman. Sam Taylor-Johnson previously held the #1 spot for the similarly wristband-and-rope-heavy Fifty Shades of Grey.
Meanwhile, the animated felony indecent exposure comedy Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie opened in second with a lukewarm $23.5 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took a steep dive to third, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 endured at fourth in its fifth weekend out, and rounding out the top five, Baywatch was still around.
