Bond battles the Phantom of the Rhapsody in the No Time To Die trailer

A modern Bond film is the perfect job for a modern-day prestige director who isn’t quite a distinctive auteur, and damned if Cary Fukunaga doesn’t perfectly match that bullet coming out of 007’s barrel.

This first trailer for Fukunaga’s No Time To Die sure does look like any number of recent Bond films, but it also definitely looks like one of the better ones. And with very deliberate callbacks to could’ve-been-shrugged-off characters like Léa Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann, Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld, and Jeffrey Wright’s Felix Leiter, it’s also perhaps one of the most legacy-tending chapters the franchise has seen. Ralph Fiennes’ M, Naomie Harris’s Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw’s Q also make appearances, but there is one new, Deadpool-esque face in the mix: Rami Malek’s Safin, a villain who covers his burned visage with this sort of geisha Phantom of the Opera by way of Inception snow sequence look.

You do you, man.

No Time To Die hits theaters this April.
